JAMB to conduct Nigeria’s UTME in 7 other countries – Registrar

The Registrar says Nigerians should stop going abroad to get an education.
The Registrar, Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, Dibu Ojerinde, said on Friday that the 2014 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, would also be conducted in seven countries abroad.
Mr. Ojerinde stated this on Friday while fielding questions from journalists at the University of Ilorin.
He said the examination, scheduled for April, would also take place in Accra (Ghana), Johannesburg (South Africa), Cameroon, Jeddah (Saudi Arabia),  Ivory Coast, London (U.K.) and Cotonou (Benin Republic).
He said JAMB is prepared to conduct a smooth and hitch-free examination in all accredited centres in the country.
Mr. Ojerinde also said about 160 examination centres were accredited to conduct the electronic-based examination, pointing out that the number of examination centres was increased by the Board this year.
“Last year, the board had only fifty-five centres,” he said.
The Registrar said about 300 examination centres applied, but only 160 were accredited because they met with the Board’s requirements.
He said the centres would have steady power supply with back-up facilities if there was power outage.
Mr. Ojerinde urged Nigerians not to abandon the country for “education tourism abroad”.
He said the Ghanaian education was not better than Nigeria’s and advised those leaving to return.

Nigerian Embassy Staff In London Exposed

An undercover investigation filmed by ITV's Exposure reveals how a worker at the Nigeria High Commission (NHC) claimed he could transport items, including stolen art, out of "any airport" using his diplomatic connections.

Posing as a criminal gang, the Exposure team, led by reporter Mark Williams-Thomas, met Alfa Abutu, in a London hotel. Abutu told them that he could transport their stolen art to Paris.

"Give me your suitcase, this suitcase usually has to be wrapped with the national flag before we can move it anywhere. And we use diplomatic vehicle whereby the police authorities will not stop us," Abutu said.

Exposure later told Abutu the art was worth nearly £1 million, to which he suggested a commission of £250,000. In a series of meetings with undercover reporters, Abutu also claimed he could help transfer money, and smuggle diamonds and gold out of the country using an embassy car and its associated privileges.

"The easiest way is that, let's say this box is loaded with $1 million and they are going out with it or gold, or diamond. With my link, we use a diplomatic vehicle from here straight to Heathrow or Gatwick," he said.

"They will not open the box they are bringing out. It's not a problem."

When asked to comment on Exposure's findings, Abutu denied any wrongdoing and said he had never been involved in criminal activities. He said he is local staff, not a diplomat, doesn't have diplomatic immunity and couldn't have assisted the Exposure team to move an item.

He said he believed Exposure's undercover reporter was not genuine but decided to play along with him.

Following the revelations, the Nigeria High Commission immediately suspended Abutu from his position in the accounts department, where he had worked for six years.

Spokesman Ahmed Inusa said:

[The Commission] supports the press and the media in their good work to expose embassy workers…who either pose as diplomats with a view to committing criminal acts for financial gains or diplomats who abuse their diplomatic privileges for any reason.

The Mission thanks ITV staff in particular, for the good work they have done.

During its investigation, Exposure uncovered that while Abutu did have diplomatic links, he was not a diplomat and his claims of diplomatic immunity were false.

Nevertheless, the Nigerian High Commission says it "utterly condemns Mr Abutu's conduct".

The Commission told Exposure that Abutu "tried to fool investigators into believing that he is [a diplomat] for personal financial gain." The Commission also said that he does not have access to the diplomatic bag.

"As soon as the High Commission became aware of Mr Abutu's conduct, he was suspended as part of the Mission's internal disciplinary procedure," spokesman Ahmed Inusa said. The Commission said Abutu's conduct was entirely personal and nothing to do with them.

Photo Of Emaciated Dora Akunyili Sparks Internet Frenzy

Now
Before
A photo showing an emaciated former Minister of Information, Professor Dora Akunyili, today sparked a major frenzy on social media platforms, forcing her to issue a statement on her Facebook page to rebut reports she is seriously sick, out of the country and needing prayers.
“This story is baseless, unfounded and the handiwork of mischief makers,” the outspoken ex-Director General of the National Agency for Foods and Drug Administration wrote, calling for it to be disregarded and discarded in its entirety.  “As every informed Nigerian knows, I am a Delegate to the National Conference currently holding in Abuja. I was duly accredited as a Delegate and I am currently in attendance at the National Judicial Institute, Abuja, venue of the conference.”
The picture making the rounds on the Internet shows a skinny version of the normally robust-looking champion of ‘Rebrand Nigeria.'  In her statement, she confirmed that she did suffer a major disease that had led her to lose a lot of weight.
Sources told SaharaReporters that the former minister was stricken with cancer, for which she received treatment in the United States for several months. Mrs. Akunyili did not respond to our text message requesting her reaction to that report.

Nigerian Government to provide funds to NYSC members for self empowerment – Bozimo

Corp members are being defrauded by authorities of the NYSC

“This will go in line with the industrial revolution strategy launched recently by President Goodluck Jonathan,” the chairman said.
The Federal Government has made arrangements with banks to provide corps members with funds for self-employment and empowerment ventures, an official has said.
The chairman of the National Governing Board of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Gordon Bozimo, announced the plan during a visit to the NYSC camp in Umunya, Anambra.
Mr. Bozimo told the 2014 batch “A” corps members that the move was in line with the government’s efforts to reduce the prevalence of post-service unemployment.
“The initiative which is under the War Against Poverty (WAP) programme, aims to produce generations of young entrepreneurs who will play a pivotal role in the nation’s economy.
“This will go in line with the industrial revolution strategy launched recently by President Goodluck Jonathan,” the chairman said.
He said the board would ensure that beneficiaries of the financial grants were equipped with adequate knowledge of business implementation strategies and management of small and medium scale enterprises.
The chairman further disclosed that the board was partnering with some banks to deploy mobile cash machines in all orientation camps nationwide.
Mr. Bozimo expressed the hope that the machines would address the challenges encountered by corps members in making cash transactions. He advised the corps members to be of good character and be security conscious by limiting their movements within their areas of service.
“If you take your primary assignment seriously and you are able to get commendation either from the state secretariat, state government or your place of service, attesting that you are somebody of character, you could easily get a job.
“This is because Nigeria is becoming competitive; what is scarce in Nigeria is character and not first degrees any more.
“So if you have good character and attestation, your chances of employment are brighter,” Mr. Bozimo said.
Earlier in her address, the state co-ordinator of the scheme, Inyang Ekpe, commended the state government and other well-meaning individuals in the successful running of the camp.
Mrs. Ekpe said that the 1,661 corps members deployed to the camp had shown strict compliance to rules and unparalleled eagerness to serve the nation.
She expressed the hope that the ongoing tour of camps by the chairman would provide lasting solutions to some challenges and redefine the NYSC fundamentals as envisioned by the founding fathers.

4,316 Of 4,556 Immigration Jobs Allocated To Governors & Lawmakers

‘Immigration jobs shared to govs, lawmakers’

.Activists demand firing of Moro, Parradang
.FG to set up probe panel today— Minister
Most of the Immigration jobs that hundreds of thousands turned up trying to get on Saturday have already been allocated to well-connected politicians, including state governors and federal lawmakers, sources told Daily Trust in Abuja yesterday.
Only 240 of the 4,556 slots at the Nigerian Immigration Service remained for the 522,6752 “ordinary” applicants who trooped to the test centres and caused a stampede in which at least 16 of them died.
The Immigration Service had said a total of 522,652 applicants turned up at the venues spread around the country, battling for 4,556 jobs.
A source briefed about the recruitment process, which is being handled by the Board of Immigration, Customs and Prisons, told Daily Trust that among those who were already allocated job slots are governors, senators, House of Representatives members and ministers.
“They shared all the positions among governors, senators and others. What remains for those ordinary job seekers was 240,” the source said.
Another source from one of the top anti-corruption agencies said the money collected from all the applicants amounted to about N7 billion.
“Look, each applicant paid N1,000. From the record 7 million applied, so they generated about N7 billion,” he said.
When contacted, spokesman for the Immigration Service Mr. Chukwuemeka Obuah said he was not aware of sharing of the job slots, as the recruitment process was not even handled by the service itself.
“I don’t know about that, I don’t know about the issue of slots. The issue of this recruitment exercise was undertaken by the board, the Nigerian Immigration Service did not operate the board,” Obuah said.
“What I know is that Nigerians lost their lives and it is tragic and unfortunate.”
Efforts to get Senate’s position were not successful as chairman of the Senate Interior Committee Atiku Bagudu did not answer telephone calls.
But the House of Representatives Interior Committee said if National Assembly members were given any allocation of job slots, they were entitled to them.
Committee chairman Rep Umar Bature (PDP, Sokoto) told Daily Trust by telephone yesterday: “People can say whatever they want to say. The National Assembly members are members of the public. So if they are given slots, I think they are entitled to it. But that is the issue that we would look at when we meet with the Senate committee. But I think we should not be looking at the scapegoat,” he said.
He said the committee would investigate to find out causes of the incident.
On the criticism over monies collected from applicants, Bature defended the Immigration Service, saying all agencies routinely collect application form fees from job seekers.

‘Moro, Parradang must go’
Meanwhile, criticism has trailed the deaths of job seekers on Saturday, with individuals and groups calling for the sack and prosecution of the Interior Minister Abba Moro as well as the Controller General of Immigration David Parradang.
In a statement in Abuja last night, a group of 55 senior activists and politicians said the minister and the controller must be held to account for the deaths.
“If the lives of Nigerians mean anything, the leadership and management teams in the Ministry of the Interior and the NIS must be held to account for these deaths,” the statement said.
“This tragedy was needless, foreseeable, and avoidable. The failures of the Ministry of the Interior and NIS to adequately manage the process and safeguard the safety and security of the jobseekers is inexcusable.”
They demanded the sacking of Moro and Parradang, and urged the Attorney-General of the Federation, Inspector-General of Police and Director-General of State Security Service to open a joint criminal investigation into the deaths.
The statement was signed by Alhaji Bashir Othman Tofa, Dr. Ayesha Imam, Dr. Jibrin Ibrahim, Dr. Ishiyaku Mohammed, Dr. Chidi Anselm Odinkalu, Mr. Olusegun Adeniyi, Dr. Hussaini Abdu, Mr. Femi Edun, Dr. Abubakar Siddique Mohammed, Mal. Abba Kyari, Dr. Kole Shettima, Mrs. Maryam Uwais, Prof. Ebere Onwudiwe, Mal. Nasir Ahmed El-Rufai, Alhaji Yusuf Tuggar, Mr. Yemi Candide-Johnson, Alhaji Tajudeen Fola Adeola, Waziri Adio, Alhaji Bashir Yusuf Ibrahim, Iniruo Wills, Mrs. Ayo Obe, Yunusa Yau, Nasir Ladan, Dr. Jeremy Weate, Prof. Nsongurua Udombana, Dr. Charmaine Perreira, Saka Azimazi, Dr. Bibi Bakare-Yusuf, Mrs. Funke Adekoya, Jibrin Okutepa, Chief Ziggy Azike, Roland Ewubare, Mrs. Stella Ugboma, Prof. Ernest Ojukwu, Chukwuma Odelugo, Dr. Solomon Ebobrah, Afolabi Kuti, Mrs. Victoria Ibezim-Ohiaeri, Ms. Seember Nyagher, Dr. Joan Oviawe, Ikeazor Akaraiwe, Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, Doueyi Fiderekumo, Dakorim Boma Odunuga, Alaezi Nmezi, Dele Aloko, Mrs. Ozioma Izuora, Ms. Lola Shoneyin, Mal. Bilya Bala, Dr. Aliyu Modibbo Umar, Uba Saidu Malami, Obinna Anaba, Ms. Wumi Asubiaro, Alhaji Suleiman Adamu and Mr. Obi Akaraiwe.
Also yesterday, the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) said the job seekers’ deaths were a direct consequence of “15 years of misrule by the PDP-led Federal Government.”
In a statement in Lagos, APC spokesman Alhaji Lai Mohammed said the Interior Minister must bear direct responsibility for the incident and must step down from his position or be sacked.
“Despite huge yearly budgets rolled out since 1999, the PDP-led Federal Government has failed to create jobs for our teeming youth, and the number of those who are jobless has now reached such an alarming rate that a job emergency may have to be declared to avert an impending cataclysm,” the statement said.
In his reaction, speaker of the House of Representatives Aminu Waziri Tambuwal said in a statement there was need for the authorities concerned “to investigate the remote and immediate cause of the tragedy, and to map out strategies to prevent future occurrence.”
The Trades Union Congress (TUC) described the deaths of applicants as a national disaster.
TUC president Bobboi Kaigama, who said the congress is “extremely grieved” by the deaths, called for immediate investigation into the matter as well as a probe of allegations of money collected from applicants.
The Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) also said the tragedy at the recruitment faulted government’s claim of having created 1.6 million jobs in 2013.
CNPP spokesman Osita Okechukwu said in a statement that the tragedy “is the outcome of Federal Government of Nigeria’s nebulous and inchoate economic policy.”
“Otherwise, if the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led Federal Government had in the past 15 years invested our unprecedented oil and gas revenue to critical infrastructures like refineries, modern railways, power supply, there is no way over 4,000,000 youths will pay N1,000 to chase less than 3,000 jobs in a single department of the state across the country.”
In its reaction, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) urged President Goodluck Jonathan to order the arrest and prosecution Interior Minister Moro and the Controller General of Immigration.
HURIWA coordinator Emmanuel Onwubiko and the media director Zainab Yusuf also demanded the immediate dismissal of the top officials of the Nigerian Immigration Services and the Federal Ministry of Interior for “negligence which led to the high fatality rate at the ill-fated recruitment exercise by the NIS.”
“The Federal Government must also pay heavy compensation of not less than N10 million to the families of each of the dead because their deaths were occasioned by the total official dereliction of function committed by officials,” they said in a statement.

Moro: Probe panel coming

Moro yesterday visited the National Stadium in Abuja, where some of the deaths occurred on Saturday, saying the stampede was “unfortunate and a national tragedy.”
“The situation we have found here is very unfortunate, because if you look at the gate of the stadium and the surroundings, it is a clear indication that some people had the intention to break into the stadium forcefully,” he said.
“In the process people were trampled upon and unfortunately some persons lost their lives. This is an exercise that was organized primarily to forestall this kind of incidence that we have seen today.”
Moro said adequate security was provided to maintain orderliness in all the test centres, but that “people who did not apply for the exercise tried to cash in on the openness of the exercise. Several unauthorized persons came in here, especially pregnant women; and in a paramilitary examination that involves physical exercise, I am surprised that a pregnant woman will come to partake.”
He said a committee would be set up today to look critically at the situation.

PHOTONEWS : Death, Injury And Hopelessness For Jobseekers - Nigeria's Unemployment Day Of Infamy

At least 15 job seekers lost their lives while several others sustained injuries across Nigeria during a nationwide job screening test administered by the Nigerian Immigration Service to fill some 3,000 positions in the immigration department.  In Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Benin, Kaduna unemployed youth including mothers and pregnant women turned out in their thousands to attend the screenings apparently organized to scam desperate job seekers.
The NIS had earlier scammed several applicants of application fees knowing that it lacked the capacity to administer the test or ensure safety of applicants invited to stadia across the country to partake in exams they have no means of grading.

Four Nigerian Men, One Portuguese Bride

Sham bride is arrested trying to wed fourth 'husband': Suspicious registry office staff tipped off officials minutes before ceremony

  • Raquel De Andrade was one of the UK's most prolific sham brides
  • The 22-year-old used the same wedding dress at every ceremony
  • Her groom, aged 32 and from Nigeria, has since been expelled from the UK
  • De Andrade, from Tottenham, admitted bigamy, perjury and facilitation
  • She was jailed for two years this week at Harrow Crown Court

A bogus bride was caught minutes before she could tie the knot with her fourth husband.
Raquel Neto Furtado De Andrade had already married three Nigerians to help give them the right to stay in Britain.
But her attempt to marry again for cash was foiled by suspicious staff at a register office. They tipped off immigration officials about the bigamous 22-year-old, who used the same wedding dress at each ceremony.

Sham bride: Portuguese national Raquel De Andrade (left) had three sham weddings with men from Nigeria and was about to have a fourth when the registry office received some unexpected guests - border police

Thought to be one of the country’s most prolific sham brides, she is now behind bars serving a two-year sentence.
She will be deported to her native Portugal on her release from prison.

Her scam was exposed at Harrow register office in north London. Checks revealed De Andrade had three ‘husbands’, none of which she had troubled to divorce. The fourth groom, a 32-year-old Nigerian, was arrested with her and has been kicked out of the country.
The couple arrived at the register office on October 3 with hardly any family or friends to support them on their supposedly special day.
There were unexpected guests however – in the shape of a team of immigration officers. They pounced as the bogus ceremony was about to get under way.
De Andrade, from Tottenham, north London, was charged with two counts of bigamy, two counts of facilitation and one count of perjury. She admitted the charges in February and was jailed at Harrow Crown Court on Tuesday.

The hunt is still on for her three other husbands so they can be expelled too.
It is estimated that 15,000 of the marriages that take place in England and Wales each year are bogus. In January, an official report concluded the scams exploit a ‘massive loophole’ in border controls.
Non-EU citizens can acquire the right to live in Britain from any EU national staying here.
This provides a ‘golden ticket’ for those wanting to stay in the country, according to immigration inspectors.
Most shams involve ‘Away Day Brides’ from Eastern Europe who come over for a few days to marry and then return to their home countries.
Most fake husbands are from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nigeria. Sarah Burton, head of the West London Home Office immigration enforcement team, said: ‘This was a cynical attempt to bypass immigration controls.

‘De Andrade thought her plot would go unnoticed but our officers were one step ahead of the game and stopped the couple in their tracks.
‘We are working closely with registrars across London and the UK to clamp down on sham weddings and civil partnerships. These convictions are examples of the success we are having.
‘Where there are suspicions that a relationship may not be genuine we will investigate and, if necessary, intervene to stop it happening.’
Susan Hall, leader of Harrow council, said: ‘We are working closely with the Home Office to tackle this issue. Our registrars are trained to spot and report marriages that may not be genuine. This serves as a clear warning that a jail term could await those who try to abuse the system.’

Boko Haram ideology forbidden in Islam- Scholar

Bilal Phillips said the group is itself “haram”
A renowned Islamic scholar, Bilal Philips, has condemned the extremist group, Boko Haram, saying contrary to the group’s claim of being against western education, it is the sect’s logic and reasoning that is forbidden in the eyes of Islam.
Mr. Philips described the insurgent group as being Haram themselves. “Boko Haram are Haram,” he said.
The word Haram is an Arabic word for “forbidden”, and Boko Haram which has killed thousands mainly in northern Nigeria since 2009, has as its central belief that the acquisition of western education is forbidden.
Mr. Philips, who delivered a lecture Sunday in Abuja under the theme: The Prophet; the ideal role model for all time, stated that members of the sect are ignorant of Islam.
“You cannot kill innocent kids at school and claim to be Muslims, this has driven you out of Islam because your action is an act of disbelief in itself,” he said.
The scholar said members of the sect have no conscience and it is only ignorance of Islam that will allow them “do this kind of atrocity”.
He said Muslims are expected to oppose policies only through peaceful constitutional means by bringing their view point to relevant organs of government through their trusted representatives.
He stated that Prophet Muhammad always preached peace and only fought when necessary and often times to bring peace to the community.
The moral message of Prophet Muhammad
Mr. Philips said Prophet Muhammad represented a blessing to Muslims. He said the greatness of Islam lies in its message to human kind, arguing however that the moral message of the Prophet has been greatly undermined.
“The moral foundation of civilization is shaking, Islam enjoins all Muslims to stand firm on their moral foundation as prescribed in the Quran and exemplified by the prophet,” he said.
He advised Muslims to hold unto the Islamic morality. He said democracy as advocated in many countries today allows for majority view, saying however that since the majority decide what is acceptable, morals tend to change based on the view of the people at any given time.
He said morality is law now which leads to moral chaos in the world. On the other hand, he said Islam stands by the moral principles set by the prophet.
The scholar gave example with the ongoing debate about homosexuality and how views about it have changed over time. He said homosexuality was considered a sickness by psychiatrist in the west.
“40 years ago, the average westerner would have told you that homosexuality is nasty, evil, and that even the Holy Bible consider it an abomination unto The Lord.
“By late 70s, the tables have turned and the concept was removed from the psychiatrist bible, homosexuality is now considered an alternative lifestyle, and whoever oppose it is the one now described as being sick,” he said.
He said homosexuality is now replaced with homophobia, adding that in many countries of the west today, fornication, adultery and even incest are decriminalized and they are not considered as crime.
He added that morality has now become subjected to democracy.
“Democracy has a lot of benefit because it allows for majority views, but when it infringes on what is right or wrong, it becomes a problem,” he said.
Mr. Philips said the message of Islam as propounded by the prophet is fundamentally a moral message. He stated that the message of Islam is that whoever killed a human being must be killed in order to avoid further killing, adding however that Islam forbids killing of animals for sport.
The scholar advised Muslims to be open. He said the five pillars of Islam- shahadah, salat, fasting, hajj and zakat- we’re essentially for the benefit of human kind.
He urged Muslims to share knowledge and live exemplary lives because they will be called to account.
Quoting from the Quran and Hadith, Mr. Philips said Allah will place a brick from hell fire over any Muslim that hides knowledge. “Muslims are obliged to inform others about Islam,” he said.
The rise of Islam
Mr. Philips called on Muslims not to “feel bad, give up hope or despair” he said the apparent on going media war against the religion is a sign that Islam is on the rise.
“The prophet faced all sorts of opposition but he did not give up. Forty years ago, Islam is not mentioned in the media, so talking about it constantly is a good sign,” he said.
He said Muslims will continue to succeed as long as they follow the path of the prophet.
“Islam is a living faith, not just a set of norms and rituals,” he said.

Nigeria: Police arrests man for opening 24 accounts with one bank

The Police Special Fraud Unit has arrested a 39 year-old-man it accuses of specializing in opening multiple bank accounts under different names to defraud financial institutions and the public.
The suspect, Okonkwo Nwachukwu, was arrested after he allegedly attempted to open another savings account at a Zenith bank branch at Amuwo Odofin, Lagos.
Mr. Nwachukwu claimed the multiple accounts were to enable him beat the government’s cashless policy, to allow his business run efficiently.
But a police statement on Sunday said that Mr. Nwachukwu presented an already completed savings account opening package bearing the name of Obiozor Ifeanyi and identified himself as such with a National Identity Card.
“While the Customer Service office was checking the documents, the suspect went to the Marketing Unit and collected another savings account opening package and completed same with another name Ogueji Nnamdi and returned to the Customer Service Desk and presented same for account opening with another National Identity Card bearing Ogueji Nnamdi,” the statement said.
“This attempt to open another savings account within minutes with another identity, made the Customer Service Officer to be suspicious and consequently, she decided to search the system with phone number 08162502677 supplied by the customer and discovered that the same person had already opened about twenty-five (25) savings account at various branches bearing different names.
“It was also further alleged that he opened and operates a corporate account number 1012000129 belonging to Chukon Integrated Limited and he also identified himself as Okonkwo Nwachukwu when he opened the said account.”

“The suspect confessed to the alleged crime but stated that the multiple accounts he opened was to enable him run his business successfully. That the cashless policy does not allow him to withdraw huge sum of money in one account and as such, he was advised to open multiple accounts so as to spread his money,” the statement, signed by Ngozi Isintume-Agu, Public Relations Officer, SFU, said.
“He added further that he has N50, 000.00 each in 15 different accounts while the remaining accounts have N20, 000.00, N10, 000.00 and N5, 000.00 respectively.
“He equally confessed that the National Identity Card and PHCN bills were all forged by one Pepper who is still at large. The suspect came back from China on 27th January 2014 and started the multiple account opening from 5th February, 2014 to 7th February when he was apprehended,” the police added.

Passengers on Malaysia Airlines plane come from 14 countries, airline says

A delegation of painters and calligraphers, a group of Buddhists returning from a religious gathering in Kuala Lumpur, a three-generation family, nine senior travelers and five toddlers.

They hail from 14 countries, but most of the 227 passengers on board missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 were Chinese, according to the manifest released by the airline. The 12 missing crew members on the flight that went missing Friday were Malaysian.

Other passengers were from India, Indonesia, Australia, the United States, France, New Zealand, Ukraine, Canada, Russia and the Netherlands, the airline said.

The 154 passengers from China (including Taiwan) included a group of painters and calligraphers and Buddhists returning from a religious gathering, Chinese state media reported. In Beijing, relatives of the passengers waited for hours at a hotel for news about the missing flight.

One woman shouted in Chinese, "My son was only 40 years old."

An Austrian Foreign Ministry spokesman said a man listed on the airline's manifest is safe and was never aboard the aircraft. The Austrian national's passport was stolen two years ago, Austrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Martin Weiss told CNN.

Similarly, Italian Foreign Ministry spokesman Aldo Amati said no one from his country was on the plane, even though an Italian was on the manifest. Malaysian officials said they were aware of reports that the Italian's passport had been stolen, but had not confirmed that.

U.S. nationals on the plane's manifest were identified by the airline as Philip Wood, 51; Nicole Meng, 4; and Yan Zhang, 2.

A senior U.S. State Department official confirmed Saturday that three U.S. citizens were onboard the aircraft. Embassy officials were trying to determine whether additional U.S. citizens were on the flight.

"We extend our deepest condolences to the loved ones of those on board Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370," U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement. "Officials from the U.S. Embassies in Kuala Lumpur and Beijing are in contact with the individuals' families. Out of respect for them, we are not providing additional information at this time."

The plane was carrying five children under 5 years old, the airline said.

A woman wipes away tears as she walks out of the reception center for family and friends of passengers aboard a missing Malaysia Airlines plane at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Saturday, March 8. The plane was carrying 239 people from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing when contact was lost.
